Entertainment Weekly names The Circle #5 worst album of the year

I STRONGLY DISAGREE.

While The Circle is certainly not their best work ever (New Jersey and Keep the Faith will forever dwarf future musical masterpieces), it IS good. I didn't think the choruses were "tired," although everyone will have a different opinion on the suggestion of "pallid rock cliches." The material was, for the most part, new and fresh - classic Bon Jovi with a modern twist. Some recycled lyrics, sure, because the guys are traditionalists in the lyrical sense - but the music is unlike any other album they've put out.

I have found myself thoroughly enjoying the entire album (okay, besides skipping When We Were Beautiful a few times) and belting out the lyrics to Superman Tonight and Love's the Only Rule especially. The passionate vocals mixed with the crescendoing melody absolutely slays me - I actually get goosebumps.

Clearly, everyone's opinion will differ - I am one of few who actually LOVES the album - but it is certainly not one of the WORST of 2009. Then again, the moron who compiled that list featured the Yeah Yeah Yeah's as the best rock album, as well as Rihanna for best pop album (can we say commercial pop machines??), and Kelly Clarkson for best...comeback? How ironically appropo.

Jon was dead-on when he said they never were - and never will be - a critic's darling. It's because the critics nowadays wouldn't know good music if it hit them square between their narrow eyes. Just gotta take them with a huge grain of salt.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I hope you all had a safe, happy, and enjoyable New Year's Eve with your loved ones - I had a very nice evening with my boyfriend and friends, playing games and watching the ball drop (3 hours delayed, though, lol). Had a wee too much champagne, though - tummy was a bit unsettled when I went to bed. LOL

Anyway, I truly hope your 2009 was better than mine. I'm hoping earnestly for a much better 2010, filled with success and love, joy and laughter, accomplishments and improvements...and I hope the same for all of you.

I know one thing 2010 will be - full of BON JOVI! I'm SO ready for The Circle tour - having managed to get tickets to three shows (and hoping for two more, if I can get these paid off in time.) Bring on the boys, live music, good friends, and a rockin' ass good time, like all Jovi tours are.

As for this site, I've got some refurbishing plans on the way - I'm really getting into the blogging scene and enjoying learning more about it, so I'm hoping to expand and enhance this place. I hope you'll continue to read and enjoy, and even pass on the name to other Jovi-ites out there. And as always, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for following along.

So while you go about your day today, take a minute to raise a glass...in the name of a brand new year, dear friends and family, and good God-blessed rock and roll.

Congrats, boys!! They're up for "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals" (how about just best performance? ;))

The 52nd annual show will air on January 31, 2010 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Beyoncé leads the nominations for the 2010 Grammy Awards with 10 nods, it was announced today. Bon Jovi's #1! (and other random bits)

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families, and if you were brave enough to engage in Black Friday battle, I hope you were successful. Now begins my favorite time of year! (But also the absolute busiest...sigh)

In case you hadn't heard, our boys made the #1 spot on VH1's Top 20 video countdown this week with 'We Weren't Born To Follow'!! YEAH! That just shows the incredible weight we fans have, because it wasn't a particularly creative video. ;) (Just sayin'!)

Anyhoo, I know I promised a review for The Circle this past week, and I PROMISE I'm going to have it soon...once I get two minutes to myself. I swear, being in college is quite literally the most insane thing I've ever done. I can't even remember a time in my life when I've been busier - and I know it's just going to get worse!

The Circle: snippets and lyrics

So I finally caved and listened to the snippets of the songs on the album page of Amazon UK.

And HOLY MOLY. Many of the fans I've talked to say they aren't thrilled with the way the album sounds so far, but *I* LOVE it. I was telling Dee that a lot of the songs have this beautiful nostalgia to them, along with that familiar adrenaline-rushing kind of singalong, crank-it-up-in-your-car kind of feel where you smile at how these men, once again, know what's in your heart. It's so tantalizing, refreshing - yet comforting at the same time: the same Bon Jovi sound but with new, fresh material.

Sure, I heard some recycled lyrics that made me smile - I think Jon just can't let go of them - but ultimately, I think this album is going to be one of my favorites.

In any case, I've been obsessively soaking up the snippets for the past hour, and I figured I'd crank out the lyrics (that I heard) for you all. I'm a words person, and therefore a lyrics person, and I love the stories Bon Jovi tells.

LOL seriously...I had ten thousand things waiting for me in my inbox this morning, and I am scrambling like a madwoman to share them all with you.

First off, NEWS.

1. The Circle CD/DVD special edition is available NOW for pre-order on Amazon.com ($19.98). I don't know if this means the regular CD package will be available soon...?

2. According to Obie on Philadelphia's WMMR w/ Pierre (and thanks to Trish for passing it on to us non-Philly folk), the tour will start in late February/early March 2010 and the boys will be rehearsing in HAWAII for a few weeks prior. Elsewhere, I heard that the U.S. leg will start in Seattle in March, making its way to the NEW Giants Stadium in May.

(Um...I so hope this is true - starting the tour on the WEST COAST for once?! EEEEEEEEP!! This means they'll be in California in March probably, perhaps for my birthday...???! OMG I can hardly contain myself, this is so exciting. And I am SO there for the new Giants. They just better be there in LATE May so I won't be taking my damn finals. *shockface*)

Song of the Week: Work For the Working Man

The new lyrics of the week have been posted: the opening lines of the new song, "Work For the Working Man".

And I felt it deserved to be the song of the week. Whether you have been there at one point in your life, or are blessed enough to never have been, I'm sure you can relate to this song.

I won't ramble on about my opinions and fears for the coming tour and potential hypocrisy on the part of the band - I'll leave all politics and such out of it. This post is meant to be purely emotion. Heart to heart. Because it's quickly become the story of my life, and I'm struggling day by day now to make it.

I know most of you have already seen this, but I found it interesting. (Sorry, I have NO clue what the interviewer is saying...nor how Jon did, LOL...but his answers were interesting.)

As I've said from the beginning, I dearly hope Jon isn't talking the pretty talk with no regard for the walk. As someone who is now being hit severely by the economic hell we call our country (and state) right now, I am even more sensitive to it. With song titles like "Work for the Working Man" and all his vocal advocacy for Tommy and Gina, I can't help but think I will lose complete faith in him - and the band - if tour prices continue to rape us this time around...

So I'm sitting here like a naked man on ice, hopping up and down in anticipation of the new Backstage launch and the friggin emails with the new password that have YET TO BE DELIVERED.

Yes, I found the new site and the new forum - and I probably wasn't supposed to yet. LOL. Backstage is probably pissed at me for leaking the URLs all over the place.

"It's an interesting question to ask: Is that a fair dose of motivation or is that a chip on your shoulder?"

Jon Bon Jovi posed that question to himself, and it's worth pondering. You might think that a man whose band has sold more than 120 million records and played before tens of millions of fans in the course of an illustrious 26-year career would be content to rest on his considerable laurels, at least for a while. You might think that, but you'd be wrong, and the new Bon Jovi album, The Circle, provides irrefutable proof. As its title suggests, The Circle marks a powerful reassertion of Bon Jovi's commitment to the hard-hitting, uplifting rock & roll that has been the band's indelible signature since it began. The band share an abiding bond that informs and defines their music. It is a circle that remains unbroken.

"The album title," Bon Jovi explains, "has several meanings. Some may say that with this album we have come full circle. Others may see the circle as never ending. I see it as very hard to get in to and even harder to get out of," the singer says with a laugh.

Having had 5 studio records in this decade, there are songs on each record that represent the world around us. And while they don't always like what they see, they try hard not to see the cup as half empty. From the new single "We Weren't Born To Follow" to the powerful "When We Were Beautiful," the songs are as uplifting and anthemic as anything Bon Jovi and Sambora have ever written.

Another reason for the anthemic sound of The Circle is the re-emergence of Richie Sambora.

"This is meant to be a stadium, turn-the-guitars-back-up record, and that's a testament to having Richie at my side," Jon says. "I can't tell you how much that's meant. With me and Richie, one and one makes three.

That flame burns at the heart of The Circle. "When We Were Beautiful" shares its title with the superb Bon Jovi documentary by filmmaker Phil Griffin. Like the film, the song is atmospheric and haunting. It opens with a sense of crisis: "The world is cracked/The sky is torn." Jon Bon Jovi hears the song as a true departure for the band.

"That's a unique song," he says, "We've written hits, but this is something more, this is something different. I didn't want to sugarcoat things. Those lyrics are factual. As a country and as people, we hit a wall. But the idea is to try to get back to `when we were beautiful.'"

The new studio album, The Circle, was produced by John Shanks, who also worked with the band on the two preceding Bon Jovi albums, Lost Highway (2007) and Have a Nice Day (2005). The album has an underlying positive theme that is apparent throughout the songs. Whether it's questioning your vitality in "Fast Cars," or asking what the future holds in "Work for the Working Man," the songs are about the prospect of people having to find new directions in their lives. In these trying times every word relays the truth.

So The Circle, then, like all of Bon Jovi's best music, stares down the troubles that afflict our lives, and offers a bracing vision for overcoming those obstacles. It's stirring, and it's an emotion that, strong as the album is, will find its most convincing expression on the concert stage. And this is why Bon Jovi have managed to play over 2600 concerts to over 34 million fans in over 50 countries.

New single artwork + Richie's take on the album...

Backstage just posted the artwork for the 'Follow' single - vedy interesting, I must say. It's got that retro, back-in-action feel to it - and while I love that type of pose Jon and Richie get into onstage a lot, where's the rest of the band?!



Also, Queenie just posted a segment from an interview Richie did with Rolling Stone, which I also found interesting. I love how he describes the new album as "fresh reinvention", and he says himself that they went back to their roots. He also says it might not be called The Circle, after all...but then he also said they were still mixing the album, which makes the interview sound like it was written awhile ago.

So who knows. Enjoy anyway.

Bon Jovi’s last album, 2007’s Lost Highway, saw the longtime Jersey tunesmiths veer off into Nashville territory. And while the album was a sizable hit with their fanbase, on the group’s forthcoming album, guitarist Richie Sambora promises a return to the group’s roots. “It’s back to rock & roll for us, man,” Sambora tells Rolling Stone. “Jon and I had a wonderful time making it. Very proud of it — just getting down to mixing it right now. We hit a very prolific period in our songwriting.” Sambora reveals the band was considering churning out a greatest-hits album, but reports, “We started having so much fun making this record, that we decided we would do a studio album first. It sounds fresh — I think we reinvented ourselves again.”

The album will be out in November, and RS can report the title currently floating around cyberspace is not correct. While he couldn’t reveal the actual album name, Sambora did muse on the band’s evolution since going a bit country on their last LP: “I think what happened is the fact that we made the kind of Nashville-influenced record, and it created this vacuum now for a big rock record from us. There’s a continued evolution… it doesn’t sound like any other previous record. Everybody that we’ve been playing it for has been real turned on by it, and we’re certainly happy with how it turned out.”

Rest easy longtime fans, Sambora promises that the disc is unmistakably Bon Jovi. “There’s going to be some big choruses on there. It sounds like Bon Jovi, but it sounds fresh. We experimented with a lot of new sounds and had a really good time working with [producer] John Shanks, who is also a really good guitar player, so he and I did a lot of ‘weaseling’ with the guitar sounds. There are a lot of really good guitar sounds and new kind atmospheres on the new Bon Jovi record, that I think makes it really modern. I think people are going to dig it, man. And it rocks hard.”

And will Bon Jovi be hitting the road in support of studio album number 11? “Next year. 2010, probably spring time we’ll get going. And we’re going to go for a long time. It’s going to be a big one.”

And so it begins!! "We Weren't Born To Follow" hits airwaves...

...and sends my poor bank account into a panicked hyperventilation because it is so poorly lacking tour funds.

The rumors have flown all week, and Obie O'Brien finally "confirmed" a few days ago that Bon Jovi's 11th studio album - The Circle - is due out November 10th. Tour dates are to follow in the next two weeks apparently, and the new single, "We Weren't Born To Follow" has already surfaced in American radio waves.

Guess who hasn't confirmed one iota of this, though? And guess who, once again, has been royally screwed out of $50? Yeah. Don't even ask me my thoughts on the whole FC thing. My response won't be pretty.

However, a ton of Backstagers tuned into an Arizona radio station earlier this afternoon to hear the new single, and even though I missed it, my wonderful Jovi friends had my back.

I personally LOVE it. It's a fantastic concert song, it negates all my fears about another country flavored album (though I really did like Lost Highway in its own way) and on top of it, brings back our good ol' BON JOVI. New Jersey style. Someone said it reminded them of "Born To Be My Baby" - and GOD I love that. I feel like I'm breathing in fresh air - a good, solid, LOUD rock album is just what we want and need, and by Jovi, I think we've got it!!
